Horse racing is quite popular in the United States, and it seems like the popularity of the sport continues to grow just because many states are jumping on the fast-moving train by building new horse racing tracks and organizing big horse racing events that attract thousands of fans.
In this case, we have Los Angeles, which is a county that has rich horse racing history with incredible racing venues, according to this list of fun facts about horses by TwinSpires.com.
Los Angeles is a popular tourist destination that has many things to offer. If you want a break from the beach life, and infuse your LA visit with some sporting action, we strongly recommend visiting some of the horse racing tracks near Los Angeles.
This got us inspired to highlight some of the biggest horse races and tracks that are quite popular in this area.
Most Popular Horse Racing Tracks
Even though there are many popular horse racing venues around Los Angeles, like Del Mar, we will only focus on horse races that are located in Los Angeles County. So, if you are a horse racing enthusiast make sure to time your LA visit when there is a popular race just to make your stay even more exciting.
Santa Anita Park
One of the most popular and renowned tracks in Los Angeles is Santa Anita Park, which amazingly hosted the Breeders’ Cup on ten occasions. This track is owned by Stronach Group since 2011 and has a perfect location of the backdrop of mountains, and palm trees around the course.
Santa Anita Park had a rough history. The original Santa Anita racecourse dates back prior to 1909, but it closed its doors this year and unfortunately burned down in 1912.
However, in 1934, the Santa Anita Park was re-opened again and since then it has been the playground of some of the most talented jockeys and horses from all around the world, such as Seabiscuit, Zenyatta, and John Henry.
The Santa Anita Park can accommodate 50,000 fans and it is full down to the last seat, especially for big horse racing events like the Breeders’ Cup.
Popular Races In Santa Anita Park
This race track hosts many popular horse racing events, such as the Santa Anita Derby and the Santa Anita Handicap. With that said, it also was the home for the Breeders’ cup 10 times, and it will be coming back to Santa Anita Park in 2023.
This race course also hosts many races from the Road to the Kentucky Derby qualification round, which is very exciting to see.
Even though the Los Alamitos racecourse also has a rich history behind its name dating back to 1951, it isn’t quite as popular as Santa Anita Park. It is located in the Californian city of Cypress and hosts four-quarter races with purses of more than $1 million.
Los Alamitos gained a lot of popularity when Go Man Go became a very popular horse as it was its home and where the horse trained.
Popular Races At Los Alamitos
Even though we are talking about a popular horse racing venue, there aren’t many big horse racing events that are hosted every year. In fact, the Starlet Stakes is the only Grade 1 race that is hosted at Los
Alamitos which is not too bad since this is also a very popular horse race.
This race is dominated by controversial trainer Bob Baffert, and his horse managed to win the race five times in a row.
Other races that are also popular are the Los Alamitos Futurity, Los Alamitos Derby, Great Lady M. Stakes, and the Bayakoa Stakes.
Despite not having more Grade 1 races, it is still worth the visit just because the place is full of rich horse racing history which every horse racing enthusiast would love.
